Cairo's security chief and the Egyptian central security commander were assaulted in Tahrir on Wednesday during their attempt to negotiate with protesters, Al-Jazeera reported.
Aswat Masriya was unable to confirm the news.
Clashes between protesters and police escalated on Tuesday evening in Tahrir and streets leading to it where police used gas bombs against protesters who responded by pelting stones and Molotov cocktails.
