South Africa: 'Protected Event' Status

press release

South Africa has agreed to host African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2013 from 19 January until 10 February 2013. Whenever mega sporting events of this nature are hosted by South Africa, key government departments sign guarantees indicating what their roles are in as far as their competencies are concerned.

In this regard the dti is the lead department on matters pertaining to Intellectual Property registration and enforcement and Liquor Regulations, a responsibility shared with the provinces. The Merchandise Marks Act in Section 15A empowers the Minister to grant 'Protected Event' status on application.

The Minister of Trade and Industry kindly invites the public and other interested stakeholders to participate in the consultation process of the published notice for 'Protected Event' status.

The closing date for comments is 17 December 2012. Please send comments to JSPhora@thedti.gov.za.
