Windhoek — In yet another milestone for local football, Namibia's under-15 girls football team will represent Africa at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

According to the Namibian Football Association (NFA), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently took a decision to nominate and endorse Namibia as Africa's only female football team for the Youth Olympic Games in 2014.

NFA President John Muinjo says the decision by CAF goes to show the significant strides Namibia has made in developing women's football.

"Development of the women's game in Namibia is becoming enviable and CAF duly recognized that fact, hence the selection of Namibia as Africa's sole representative to the Youth Olympics. We are extremely delighted about the selection and are now even motivated to do more for the girls."

Barry Rukoro, Secretary General of the NFA also expressed appreciation for the nomination. "If organizations like CAF and FIFA recognize you for the work you do - you must know that you are doing the right thing. I am personally delighted about this one and we will make sure we have the best team possible and ready to do Africa proud indeed. The nomination was taken based on the best development porgramme on the continent rather than qualification," Rukoro said.

Jacqueline Gertze, Head of the Women's Desk at the NFA also joined the fray on showering praises on CAF.

"I am personally very excited about the gesture from CAF. The fact that Namibia has been selected to represent Africa in this competition is phenomenal. The NFA deserves this opportunity for the millions it has spent with the assistance of the Namibian government and its partners in the Galz & Goals project."

The 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games (officially known as II Summer Youth Olympic Games) is the second of the Summer Youth Olympics, a major international sports and cultural festival, due to be celebrated in the tradition of the Summer Olympic Games from August 16-28, 2014.

The 2014 Youth Olympics Games are slated to be held in Nanjing, China in a decision announced on February 10, 2010 after voting by IOC members at the 122nd IOC Session in Vancouver, Canada.
