Gambia: Door Closed to Media During Council Meeting KMC Pro Explains

column

In an earlier publication, Foroyaa reported that the Local Government Act provides for the public, including the press, to witness or cover Council proceedings. A reporter was sent to enquire about the holding of meetings and was told by the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) that they were not having meetings at the time but promised that they will inform the general public and invite the media when they start sittings.

Foroyaa was however informed that the KMC was having a meeting yesterday, Tuesday, 20 November 2012, which prompted the paper to send a reporter to cover the proceedings which was not officially announced in the media. The KMC PRO, Mr. Pa Khalifa Sanyang, confirmed that a meeting was convened (yesterday) but that it was an emergency meeting and that he didn't know what the agenda was. He admitted that the law has provided for the members of the public to witness Council proceedings. He again promised that from now on the public will be duly informed of Council meetings for them to attend.

EDITOR's NOTE

Foroyaa will contact the Mayor to find out why the door was closed to the media.
