Gambia: BSAC Chairman Says Gambia Is Exemplary in Youth Empowerment

Basse — The Chairman of Basse Area Council, Omar Sampo Ceesay has hailed the achievements of the government of The Gambia, under the leadership of President Jammeh, in terms of youth empowerment, describing it asexemplary.

Ceesay made this statement while deputising for the Governor of the region at the closing ceremony of a five-day youth's caravan and forum organised by Tostan International The Gambia, which was held at Sutukonding.

According to him, the government of The Gambia has created lots of job opportunities for young people of the country. He noted that such initiatives like NYSS, NEDI, GAMJOBS among others, are all geared towards creating a positive change in the minds of young people of the country for them to meaningfully contribute to nation building. He therefore commended President Jammeh for his efforts in bringing such important projects to the country.

"The government of the Gambia under President Jammeh isalways committed to the welfare of young people of the country. Therefore we the young people of the country should be at the forefront in the development process of the country," he remarked.

He applauded Tostan for building the capacity of the community of the area particularly in the area of democracy, human rights among others.

For his part, Ansou Kambaye, the national coordinator of Tostan International The Gambia thanked the youth of the region for taking part in the forum, and noted that for the past years Tostan has embarked on lots of capacity building training.

He opined that investing in youths means investing in the development process of the country, vowing that they will do everything possible to complement government's efforts in the promotion of young people of the country.

The objectives of the youth caravan, he said, include to advocate the realisation of the rights and corresponding responsibilities of children and youth, enable youth to disseminate relevant information to their fellow youths on issues affecting their welfare and wellbeing, and to solicit support and consideration of authorities on the empowerment of youths as future leaders.

For his part, the National Assembly member for Wulli West, Kassium Jallow, commended Tostan for their support to the development of the region and the country at large. For the past years, he attested, the government of The Gambia has been very supportive to the welfare of young people of the country.

He pointed out that the development and welfare of young people of the country should be everybody's responsibility, as government is playing her part by providing conducive environment and also creating job opportunities for them.

The chief of Wulli West, Alhagie Kemo Jatta; Balla Musa Jarra from the Department of Youth and Sports both harped on the importance of the forum and commended Tostan for their support to the young people of the region.

Other speakers included: Lamin Kebbeh from the Police Child Welfare unit, and Sulayman Jabbie.
