Zimbabwe: Hockey Fiesta in Zimbabwe

ACTION in international hockey returns to Zimbabwe next month with the staging of the Africa Cup of Club Championships at Khumalo Stadium.

The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe are hosting the tournament which is expected to attract 12 men and eight women's clubs from across the continent.

HAZ vice-president Humphrey Chigwedere said teams from Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi and hosts Zimbabwe are set to take part.

"We are privileged to be hosting the ACCC from December 1 to 8 in Bulawayo.

"This is an international clubs' competition and the largest on the continent.

"I understand that the teams from Ghana will start arriving on Thursday," said Chigwedere.

Chigwedere said the teams would be using the two recently refurbished pitches at Khumalo, which are regarded among the top facilities in Africa.

Reigning men's champions Sharkia of Egypt who beat Strathmore of Kenya 4-2 last year have confirmed that they will be defending their title.

Zimbabwe will be represented by Huletts and Hippo Valley in the men's section while Bulawayo Athletic Club play in the women's category.

"The local clubs could be fielding some of the players who took part in the African Olympic qualifiers in Bulawayo last year," said Chigwedere.

The Lowveld sides Hippo Valley and Huletts had been camping in Chiredzi and could be moving to Bulawayo today.

Tongai "Doc" Mukwewa, who has dedicated his time to uplifting hockey in Chiredzi, is helping the two teams in their preparations. The clubs are hoping to train at the water-based astro turf A arena and also practise on the sand-based B arena.
