A man has been handed a 15 years in jails for defiling and impregnating a 16-year -old girl in Nyandarua. The ruling by a Naivasha court came after the presentation of DNA results showed that the shocked James Gathuru, 20, was 99.99 per cent the father of the child born out of the attack.

He had been charged with defiling the girl on August 13, 2010 at Kitiri in Nyandarua. He faced an alternative charge of indecently assaulting the girl.

Chief magistrate Stephen Githinji said the DNA results had pinned down Gathuru, adding that it had been proved beyond doubt that the accused defiled the girl. Gathuru's demand for the DNA evidence turned out to haunt him.

In mitigation, Gathuru said because he is the father to the child, he was ready to take care of it. The court heard that Gathuru, who is neighbour to the girl had attacked her when he allegedly went to borrow a box of matches.

The schoolgirl, who conceived after the defilement, tried to commit suicide on realising that she was pregnant. Her pregnancy came to light after the abortive suicide attempt.
