Zimbabwe: Thursday 22 November 2012 - Issue 474

press release

The MDC has condemned the continued plunder of council resources by Ignatious Chombo, the Zanu PF minister of Local government, adding that he must be investigated immediately. It is on record that Chombo's continued meddling in local council affairs has virtually crippled service delivery in all the urban councils.

Unless Chombo is stopped, the situations in local urban authorities will continue to deteriorate. Chombo, a renowned corrupt baron has turned council authorities into his personal cash cow facilities and his activities have resulted in most urban authorities failing to provide essential services like water, collection of refuse and repair of roads.

In Masvingo, MDC Youth Assembly secretary general Promise Mukwananzi has urged youths from the three political parties in the GPA to come up with concerted efforts to eradicate violence ahead of the watershed polls scheduled for next year.

Addressing youths from MDC, Zanu PF and MDC -N at a JOMIC interparty meeting held at Chevron Hotel yesterday Mukwananzi called for zero tolerance to political violence adding youth wings from the three parties must unite and promote tolerance.

"We have to promote tolerance and divergence of views among youths. There is need for a paradigm shift among youths because we are facing similar challenges of unemployment across the political divide. We must shift from being perpetrators of violence to become champions of democracy. We are much aware of the fact that some of you have been used by politicians from their respective political parties to fan violence.

It is on record that there are politicians who sponsor acts of violence. Youths have common problems and hence there is need for unity of purpose. We are all Zimbabweans and we will sit at various platforms to speak out against political violence.

We thank JOMIC for making frantic efforts to promote a conducive environment for free and fair elections, therefore we must speak one language and one message. There are politicians from some political parties here who are using the youth to unleash violence against innocent people. That is what happened in the previous elections and obviously we do not need a repeat of the same scenario," said Mukwananzi.
