Kenya: Sewerage Company Decries Poor Waste Disposal

LEAKAGES and bursts of sewer lines in Kisumu have been attributed to poor solid waste disposal in the town. The Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company yesterday said the practice has caused the clogging of sewerage drainage system in the city.

Kiwasco corporate communications boss Gregory Odero said pipes leakages and bursts have also resulted from vandalism of parts of the sewer infrastructure.

"Theft of sewer reinforcements has equally led to the occasional leakages and bursts of sewer lines in Kisumu," said Odero. "The gradual upgrading of the sewerage network is in progress as we seek to stop the occasional leakages and bursts."

In spite of such challenges, Odero said Kiwasco carries out timely emergency repairs and routine maintenance to avoid service disruption of water supply.
