Gambia: KMC Mayor Launches NAYCONF LOC

On Wednesday, 21 November 2012, the Kanifing Municipality Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the forthcoming National Youth Conference was officially launched by the Mayor at a ceremony held at the Council grounds. The NAYCONF, a youth jamboree which is organised every two years, is taking place this year at Janjangbureh, Central River Region, from the 14th -22 December 2012.

In his welcoming remark, Bakary Badjie, the Councilor for Youth, said two years after the successful hosting of the NAYCONF by the Municipality, the event is now going to be hosted by another region and it is meant for the young people of the Gambia. He said this year's theme is 'Directing and re-orienting youth participation towards the productive sectors of the economy'.

"As a young people we have a role to play in the life of young people and what affect them", he said.

Mr. Badjie told the gathering that they participate in the three key events namely the youth conference, sports and cultural activities. He some of the activities include football matches, wrestling and a beauty pageant.

Mr. Badjie expressed his hope that they will be participating in all the events and to do what is expected of them if they get the necessary support.

The Youth Councillor concluded that they are not expecting less in CRR and and that he is hopeful that they will bringing all the trophies to Kanifing Municipality.

In giving the vote of thanks, Lamin Marong of the Youth Council Committee of the Municipality noted that the event is meant for the young people and that they have a 30 member committee in the LOC. He added that in addition to this, there is also a 15 member committee to oversee the work. He said they have got the right people in the committees.

In his launching statement, Yankuba Colley, the KMC Mayor, expressed his appreciation of the youth of the Municipality and said they want success. He noted that there are challenges but urged the young people of the municipality to bring all the trophies.

Mayor Colley advised the committee members to demonstrate leadership and the participants to show discipline during the course of the event.
