Egypt: Al-Azhar Congratulates Pope

Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark Diocese Tawadros II received Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayyeb and Mufti of the Republic Ali Gomaa in the papal headquarters of St Mark's Cathedral on Wednesday21\11\2012.

Tayyeb and Gomaa congratulated the Pope on his enthronement as part of good relations between al-Azhar leaders and the church.

"We are pleased with this national spirit which is so clear in such occasions," said the Pope. He hailed the role of al-Azhar, which, he said, contributes to promoting the moderate thought and teachings in Egypt.

Tayyeb said "We are happy with the Pope's enthronement. We hope to work together and cooperate against any attempts undermining the principle of citizenship."
