Nigeria: Ahmadu Bello University Honours Babangida, Danjuma, Others

Zaria — The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria yesterday honoured former Head of State Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Jabar and Alhaja A. Mogaji. The four personalities were honoured at the university's special Golden Jubilee Convocation, which marked an end to the ABU at 50 celebrations.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, said the personalities were honoured because of their contributions to the development of humanity.

"In their respective capacities as advocates of peace and progress, they deserved inclusion in the prestigious list of statesmen, entrepreneurs, nobilities and other great achievers that ABU has uniquely honoured in the last fifty years," Professor Mustapha said.

He said while ABU has recorded tremendous achievements, it is also faced with some serious challenges that include the decongesting the existing campuses, which requires huge funds.

"The university doesn't have the funds to decongest the campuses. Finding resources with which to meet the increasing cost of maintaining existing facilities that are old and over stretched, is another problem," Professor Mustapha said. He explained that despite the fact that the university's revenue generation has increased, but it cannot meet the daunting challenges facing the institution, hence the need for other stakeholders to contribute their quota through the appeal fund that the university launched yesterday.

Responding on behalf of the honorary awardees, General Babangida, who was the only person personally present among the four, thanked the University for finding them worthy of the award.

Apart from the honorary awardees, 108 students of the university were conferred with Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa'ad Abubakar, who is the chancellor of the university. 1,683 persons were awarded with M.A and M.Sc degrees while 937 students were conferred with postgraduate diplomas.

The Vice President Namadi Sambo led the list of degrees that attended the special convocation. Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmad Rufa'i, minister of education, Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and many others also attended the ceremony.
