Egypt: LE2.88 Wind Power Station to Be Set Up in Gabel El-Zeit

The Ministry of Electricity & Energy is putting up a tender early next year for the establishment of a 200-megawatt wind-operated power station Gabal el-Zeit area in the Gulf of Suez at a total cost of LE2.8 bn.

The project, to be operated and linked to the national power grid in April 2014, aims to contribute to protecting the environment by curbing carbon dioxide emissions, according to Minister Mahmoud Balbaa.

The project should enhance the wind power generation capacity to 720 megawatt by 2020, he said, adding the new wind farm has 100 turbines with two megawatt each.

"The generated power would hit 894 megawatt hour annually, saving 191.000 tons of oil equivalents and lowering emissions by 491.000 tons of emissions,' Babaa said.
