A federal legislator and Nigeria's former ambassador to Spain and Rome, Ambassador Kingsley Sunny Ebenyi, has described the recent elevation of John Cardinal Onaiyekan, by Pope Benedict XVI as the most cherished gift for Christmas and New Year for the country.
Ebenyi said Cardinal Onaiyekan's spiritual upliftment could not have come at a better time than now in view of the current security challenges facing the Nigerian State.
He urged Onaiyekan to use his new position to further intercede for the nation as he had always done by taking Nigeria's case to the Papalcy for special prayers for peace, progress and unity.
"Nigeria could not have asked for a better Christmas gift than your well-deserved ascendancy to the highest secular body of Cardinals in the Catholic Church, " Ebenyi said.
Tracing his first encounter with the Cardinal way back to his days as Nigeria's ambassador to Spain and Vatican, Ebenyi described Onaiyekan as a man of great intellect, humble mien, carriage and a disposition to assist at all times.
"His elevation epitomises the great challenge which the Almighty God in His infinite mercies has found him worthy and capable of bearing the cross," Ebenyi noted.
