Uganda: Man Loses Bid for Dowry Refund

A 50-year-old man in Tororo district has lost a civil suit in which he was demanding that his in-laws return the dowry he paid for his former wife.

Bulasio Ochan filed a case against his former wife, Federiko Akong and the in-laws, demanding for the return of three cows, two goats, a new bicycle and two chicken, which he paid as dowry 27 years ago.

Ochan accused Akong of walking out of their marriage.

Akong, however, said shortly after their wedding on November 28, 1985, Ochan abandoned her for four years at their marital home in Mukujju village, Mukujju sub-county in Tororo district and went to live with another woman in Rubongi sub-county in Tororo. She said it was after this that she decided to walk out.

Tororo Chief Magistrate Charles Emuria on Friday dismissed the case with costs, saying circumstances in the case lacked substance.
