Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) appointed a Mauritanian to head its Al Vourghan brigade in the Sahara, ANI reported on Friday (November 23rd).
Mohamed Lemine Ould Hacen replaces Yahya Abou El Hammam (real name Jemal Oukacha), who was promoted to Sahara emir.
Ould Hacen, (aka Abdallah Al Chinghuitty), who hails from from the Trarza region, served in several AQIM units before joining the Al Vourghan brigade.
The katibat is now reportedly operating from Timbuktu.
