Kenya: Parents Urged to Educate Girls

Mombasa county senate hopeful Hassan Mwakimako has called on parents in Likoni and the entire Coastal region to take their daughters to school.

"I call upon all parents in this region to embrace education with seriousness, especially the girl child education," he said. Mwakimako expressed concern over the poor education standards and early marriages at the Coast, which have curtailed efforts to educate girls.

"Parents have overlooked the role of providing their daughters with proper education. They have instead lured them to be married at very tender ages," he said.

The ODM aspirant was speaking on Friday at Caltex Grounds in Likoni during the prize giving day of Zam Zam Intergraded Girls' high school.

At the same time, Mwakimako raised concerns over the low voter turnout in Coast region. He urged residents to register as voters to choose leaders who will steer development in the region.
