Rundu — A motorist was arrested for suspected drunk-driving after his Nissan pick-up overturned Sunday morning, killing one of his passengers, according to the police at Rundu.
Kavango Regional Crime Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton, confirmed that the driver of the pick-up, Angelo Manuel Fernandes (28) was arrested and appeared in the Rundu Magistrate's Court yesterday.
He appeared before magistrate Nelao Brown and public prosecutor Clara Mwilima, and was released on bail of N$5000. He faces a culpable homicide charge and that of reckless and negligent driving.
The accident occurred near the Rundu Sports Stadium at about 4.30 a.m. when the vehicle overturned after the driver reportedly attempted to overtake another car, explained the deputy commissioner.
Unlike the victim - both the driver and another passenger miraculously escaped unscathed. The 26-year-old deceased was identified as Jan Vincent Aweseb from the Tutungeni location in Rundu.
Aweseb's next of kin have been notified, said Bampton.
The case was remanded to January 29 2013 for further police investigations. Defence lawyer Petrus Strauss represented the accused.
