Uganda: State Drops Case Against Asians

Jinja Chief Magistrate's court has dropped a case against 14 Asians attached to Steel Rolling Mills.

The case was dropped after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) withdrew charges against the accused. The Asians had been charged with theft and malicious damage to property after they were arrested with what was thought to be stolen electric wires on August 12, 2012, following a police operation in Walukuba, Masese division in Jinja district.

However, Chief Magistrate Amos Kwizera startled court when he reported that he had a letter from the DPP Richard Buteera indicating that the case lacked substantial evidence to implicate the suspects.

The magistrate accordingly discontinued the proceedings. The DPP's letter also directed Kwizera to ensure the accuseds' bail deposits are refunded and their passports returned to them.
