ZIFA have finally released the remainder of the Asiagate punishments with the association yesterday giving virtually all the players a second chance to continue with their careers and pardoning coach Joey Antipas and former Warriors manager Ernest "Mapepa" Sibanda.
There was no reprieve, though, for former Warriors' coach Norman Mapeza, whose six-month ban was enforced without being converted into a suspended sentence or a fine, despite being found not guilty of match-fixing by the Zifa Independent Ethics Committee that investigated the Asiagate scandal.
The association also handed Monomotapa director and Northern Region chairman Solomon Mugavazi with a five-year ban, throwing into doubt the future of the modest Premiership side and 2012 Mbada Diamonds Cup runners-up.
Ironically, Monomotapa are also one of four teams whose names Zifa are looking at submitting to the Confederation of African Football for the Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions by Friday.
Journalist Josh Munthali, who works for ZBC and had a five-year ban hanging on his head as per the recommendations of the Ethics Committee for being part of the crew that was at the Merdeka Cup, appears to have escaped without sanctions according to the list released yesterday.
But, in what appears to be a major climbdown on the tough stance they had taken when they announced the first batch of penalties, Zifa handed suspended sentences to a host of players who took part in the controversial tours to Asia.
Unlike last month when they imposed life bans in such players like Method Mwanjali, Thomas Sweswe, Edmore Sibanda and Guthrie Zhokinyi, Zifa this time even handed the remainder of the players, coaches and officials implicated wholly suspended sentences and in some cases an option of a fine for their roles in the match-fixing scam.
Zifa chief executive, Jonathan Mashingaidze, announced the remainder of the bans in a press statement and indicated that those willing to appeal would also have to do so by the association's set deadline of November 30.
There was also a huge reprieve, though, for Motor Action coach and former Warriors assistant Antipas and the senior team's former manager Sibanda who got away with wholly suspended five-year sentences, making them eligible to continue with their football careers without paying a cent for a fine.
Former Dynamos goalkeeper Washington Arubi and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Nyasha Mushekwi also received wholly suspended sentences.
But there was no such reprieve for Mugavazi despite the Zifa board member having taken the initiative to probe match-fixing at his club earlier in 2009.
Mugavazi's reprieve could now only come if he successfully appeals against the sentence, a move that would not impact negatively on the club given that the Harare businessman has sorely been bankrolling the club.
While Mugavazi was handed a five-year ban the Monomotapa players who travelled with the club to Malaysia and Tunisia for a Champions League assignment got away with suspended sentences and fines.
However, then Monoz coach Rodwell Dhlakama his assistant Taurai Mangwiro and team manager Clayton Munemo had already received life and 10-year bans respectively.
"The Zimbabwe Football Association would like to confirm the Asiagate scandal's final pronouncements in terms of the fate of players and officials who were allegedly involved in the match-fixing and illegal betting scandal involving Zimbabwe's teams.
"The sentences are with effect from the date of the pronouncement. Some players and officials received the following bans:
Wholly suspended sentences
Wholly suspended sentences on condition that one pays a prescribed fine
Effective bans
"Players and officials who may want to appeal against the decision of the Zifa Independent Disciplinary ad-hoc committee may do so by filing their notices of appeal and paying the appeal fee of Six Thousand United States Dollars (US$6 000) through the secretariat by no later than Friday 30th November 2012," read the statement.
Zifa also banished former national coach Norman Mapeza for six months for allegedly failing to "stop or report the scam", although he was not found guilty of match-fixing during the Warriors tour to the Cecafa tournament.
While most players have been penalised for taking part in the games, former Warriors midfielder Ramson Zhuwawo, who plies his trade with South African Premiership side AmaZulu seems to have paid the price for snubbing a call to appear before the Justice Ebrahim committee as he was tried in absentia.
Zhuwawo has been sanctioned for being part of the crew of players who allegedly fixed games in Malaysia during the Merdeka Cup tournament but the former Gunners man was deported on arrival in Singapore in 2007, en-route to Malaysia, when his Emergency Travelling Document was rejected by the immigration authorities.
Zhuwawo never played at the Mederka Cup but finds himself sanctioned while Sibanda, who was the team manager at the tournament, escapes with a wholly suspended sentence.
The Justice Ebrahim committee is understood to have relied on delegation lists in cases where they could not find any paper trail on the controversial tours with the retired Supreme Court judge having asked individuals implicated to avail themselves before his committee to give their sides of the story.
With the Zifa board reportedly deciding that each trip stands as a count and that the counts be cumulative instead of running concurrently, it also meant that Pretoria University midfielder Lionel Mtizwa will have to fork out US$7 000 in fines for his involvement in the tours to the Mederka Cup, Vietnam and the Cecafa competition.
Mtizwa was fined US$3 000 each for the Vietnam and Cecafa tournaments and US$1 000 for his part at the Mederka competition.
The three competitions had also attracted wholly suspended sentences of a total five years.
Chapungu United hitman Phillip Marufu also found himself in a similar predicament with Mtizwa.
