The initiator of Winter Sports in Nigeria, Dr. Louis Obyo Nelson has accused the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, and the National Sports Commission, NSC, of deliberating frustrating all efforts geared towards introducing winter and extreme sports to the country.
Addressing the press in Abuja, the winter sports enthusiasts said for the past two years, he has been striving hard to get the sports association registered and recognized by the IOC but it has become clear to him that the relevant authorities in the country are bent on frustrating his efforts.
He said he is left with no option than to cry out because his dream of giving opportunity to the teeming youth of Nigeria at home and in the Diaspora to participate in winter sports is being frustrated by Nigerian sports authorities.
Nelson said despite several letters and personal visits to both the NOC and NSC, the concerned public officers have continued to play hide and seek game with him and he has not received either a yes or no answer from them.
He said his attempt to get the association registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission hit the rock when the NSC refused to give him the required letter of introduction.
Nelson who said he is not asking the NSC or the NOC for money to run the proposed sport association said another Winter Olympic is around the corner and if the NOC and the NSC refuse to give the association the necessary endorsement, Nigerians who are eager to represent their fatherland would remain disqualified.
"I just want to be open and frank with you people, since we have been trying to promote winter sports in Nigeria, we have met a lot of obstacles mainly due to the attitude of the people in charge of sports. They do not have an open mind and they believe that because Nigeria has nothing to do with winter so winter sports does not apply to us but that is not a reality of time.
We have written numerously to NOC and NSC and nothing is happening. I was introduced to Engineer Abu Gumel who is an Executive member of the IOC. I spoke to him and showed him all we did but there was no reaction.
