South Africa: DA Saddened By the Passing of Professor Jakes Gerwel

The Democratic Alliance is greatly saddened by the untimely death of Professor Jakes Gerwel. Our deepest sympathy goes to Mrs Phoebe Gerwel and her family.

Professor Gerwel was a person of enormous talent and served his country and its people with great distinction. We will remember him as the former Rector of the University of the Western Cape, the Director-General of former President Nelson Mandela's Office in the first democratically elected government of South Africa and, since 1999, Chairperson of the Mandela Legacy Foundation.

Most of all, we will remember him as a person of wisdom, love and gentle caring. We will miss him greatly.
