Namibia: Nation Stay Fourth After Northerns One-Day Defeat

NAMIBIA remained fourth on the log after suffering a narrow three-run defeat against Northerns in their Cricket South Africa (CSA) One-Day match in Pretoria on Sunday.

In a thrilling finish to the match, Namibia needed 13 runs from the final over to win the match, but although they made a gallant effort, they ended up four runs short of the winning target.

Namibia won the toss and sent Northerns in to bat, as the hosts got off to a fine start.

All their top-order batsmen got amongst the runs as they reached a total of 203/6 off their 40 overs.

Graeme van Buuren was the top scorer with 48 runs, while Heinrich Klaazen scored 30 not out, Cobus Pienaar 26, Shershan Naidoo 25 and Lerato Kgoatle 23.

LP van der Westhuizen was Namibia’s top bowler, taking 2/47 off eight overs, while Louis Klazinga, Brandon Viret and Bernard Scholtz each took one wicket.

In their run chase, Namibia lost the early wickets of Pikkie Ya France (3), Raymond van Schoor (19) and Sarel Burger (8) as they were reduced to 40/3.

LP van der Westhuizen and Craig Williams gave Namibia hope with a 56-run partnership before Van der Westhuizen was out for 38 off 38 balls.

Nicolaas Scholtz (7) and Christi Viljoen (7) both went cheaply, but Bernard Scholtz joined Williams as they added 52 runs for the seventh wicket before Williams was out for a top score of 60, with the total at 181.

With 16 balls remaining, Namibia still needed 23 runs for victory and they nearly got there as Scholtz added 30 and Brandon Viret 10, while the not out batsmen were Louis Klazinga (0) and Shalako Groenewald (5).

Namibia are now fourth out of seven teams on the Inland Pool log with nine points from four matches.

North West lead the log with 21 points, followed by Free State on 18 and Gauteng on nine points.

Namibian players feature prominently in both the batting and bowling averages of the competition.

LP van der Westhuizen is currently fourth amongst the top run scorers with 191 runs at an average of 47,75, while Craig Williams is sixth with 169 runs at an average of 84,50.

Brandon Viret is fourth amongst the top wicket takers with nine wickets at an average of 14,11, while LP van der Westhuizen is eleventh with seven wickets at an average of 23,71.

Namibia have meanwhile dropped down to third last position on the log in the CSA Three-Day competition, following their draw against Northerns on Saturday.

Namibia now have 24,52 points from four matches and are just above Griqualand West on 21,86 and Kwazulu-Natal on 17,52.

Eastern Province lead the log with 57,82 points from five matches, followed by Boland on 55,76 and North West on 54,98.

Namibian players are not doing too well in the averages of the CSA three-day competition.
