Eight thousand goats were yesterday recovered from heavily armed bandits at Kom in Isiolo by the police. Merti DC Chedotum Kamunyan said a joint contigent of AP, regular police and Kenya Police reservists led to the recovery of the animals four hours after they were stolen.
Yesterday morning, the bandits raided a village in Kom and made away with more than 9,000 animals. According to councillor Golicha Jarso, the raiders attacked the village at dawn. Jarso said the bandits fired shots to warn the villagers against attempts to counter them. A woman and her 12-year-old son were killed during the attack.
Kamunyan said the swift reaction by the security officers enabled them to catch up with the bandits. He said the cattle rustlers abandoned the animals after hours of engaging the security officers in a fierce shooting.
The DC said the bandits, suspected to be from Samburu East, left behind, spears, Shukas, Rungus and utensils. Kamunyan said the police used a helicopter and communication gadgets from the local conservancies to track the rustlers.
He warned that the incident may revive cattle rustling which had drastically gone down in the region. The recovery comes a week after allegations that some of the bandits who killed 42 security officers in Baragoi had fled into Isiolo to escape the arrests.
