Nigeria: Al-Makura Impeachment Ultimatum Expires Today

30 November 2012

Lafia — The seven-day impeachment notice served Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) last week expires today by 12pm even as the Speaker, Musa Ahmed Mohammed, reportedly turned down an invitation to join the governor for a security meeting.

The House, last Friday, sat during an emergency session, during which members overwhelmingly slammed Al-Makura over the spreading violence and killing in much of Nasarawa-South, the last of which sacked Agyaragu, on the outskirt of Lafia in one day. This provoked the emergency session, which deliberations were led by House Majority Leader, Godiya Akwashiki (PDP, Nasarawa-Eggon-West), leading to a seven-day ultimatum for the governor to cause actions at containing the raging crisis, or members would be compelled to invoke Section 188 of the constitution to impeach him.
