Tanzania: Mukangara Demands Ras Commitment in Sports Development

MINISTER for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Fenella Mukangara has underscored the need for Regional Administrative Secretaries (RAS) to come up with better ways or running sports in the country, so that it attains prosperity.

Mukangara made this remarks when opening a two-day meeting for RAS from almost all regions together with officials from the National Sports Council (NSC). The meeting dwells on how best the sector can be development. Minister Mukangara said, the country can attain the development in sports sector should members of the community effectively play their role.

"Everybody in the community has a responsibility of some kind in the development of sports and it is within our capacity to ensure that people are well involved in this process," she said. She further said the administrative secretaries who are the Chairpersons of the Regions Sports Committees bear key responsibilities to ensure that sports in their respective areas are given the needed attention and support.

However, she cautioned that such responsibilities should not be left to RAS alone as each member of a community has a role to play to ensure that the country excels in sports. Mukangara said of late, the country has not been performing well in sports while it has a lot of talents which she said, should be tapped at early stages and get developed.

"We need to prepare and train our athletes in a professional manner and this needs much efforts and commitment from stakeholders," she said She challenged the regional authorities to set budget in their councils to ensure that they have in place infrastructures, coaches, referees and sports gear as well as sports officers to oversee the programme in a bid to make the sports development a reality.

Mukangara said the major setback has always been the implementation of the sports development programmes, saying with few resources, the authorities should work on how best they can execute their responsibilities within limited budget.

Earlier, NSC Chairman, Dioniz Malinzi said they want to identify the challenges facing the development of the sector and come up with proper ways to address them. He said the NSC Acts states the duties of RAS and that the meeting aimed at discussing how best they will improve the working relations between the two and to foster it for the better of the sports sector.
