Kenya: Register for Elections, Citizens Told

AN aspirant for the Nandi county governor's seat has called on Kenyans to register as voters.

Speaking yesterday in Eldoret, Cleophas Lagat said: "It is discouraging to record a low turnout only a week after the exercise kicked off countrywide."

"Concerted efforts meant to encourage people to register should be employed now because of the worrying trends at the moment. Time will elapse and the IEBC(Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission may not extend the registration period," said Lagat.

There are fears that the IEBC may not meet its target of registering 18 million voters by the December 18 deadline.

"Many colleges and universities will close on December 20, which means many of them might not register as voters. The government should look into this issue," added Lagat.

He also urged employers to allow their employees time to register.

He said he will industrialise Nandi county if elected.

"Our county has a potential and the right person to anchor it firmly in terms of economic development and I believe I am the right person," said Lagat.
