Kenya: Eugene, Gedion, Biwott Sign Pre-Election Deal

Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa has entered into a pre-election alliance with former Cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott and Gideon Moi, retired president Moi's son.

Eugene's New Ford Kenya announced yesterday that it had agreed on a pre-election agreement with United Democratic Movement, Biwott's National Vision Party and Moi's Kanu.

The parties will make their agreement public on Tuesday next week when they deposit it at the Registrar of political parties in accordance to the law.

Eldoret North MP William Ruto unsuccessfully tried to take over UDM last year.

Apart from exploiting the Kanu network in other parts of the country, the New Ford Kenya presidential hopeful, hopes to get financial backing from the Moi and Biwott.

"Eugene wants to show those who have used and dumped him that he is capable of charting his own political future," said a source involved in the negotiations.

Eugene patted ways with Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto last week after the two denied him the position of running mate.

The pact between trio -- New Ford-Kenya, NVP and UDM -- was signed yesterday by the secretary generals of the parties at the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. Kanu's secretary general Nick Salat, who was absent, is yet to sign the pact.

Those who signed the document included Benjamin Muema (New Ford Kenya), Martin Kamwaro (UDM) and Marere Wamwachai (NVP). Biwott and former Cabinet minister Kipruto arap Kirwa attended the event.

The parties agreed to form a team comprising of National Executive Council members of the four parties together with technical and legal experts to begin negotiations and develop a pre-election coalition before December 4.

"The agreement will be ready for depositing with the Registrar of Political Parties within the stipulated time," they added.

The parties vowed to campaign across the country to sell the coalition's policies.

"Any decisions taken will be through consensus and consultation among all the coalition parties," they said.

"There were differences in the G7 Alliance and we could not agree. That is politics. Despite all that, I am still pursuing my presidential ambitions," he stated.
