TNA and URP aspirants are uncomfortable with the idea of zoning off areas that are dominated by supporters of the two parties.
TNA allied politicians in Rift Valley have warned that zoning of regions as demanded by URP team negotiating with Uhuru's team is undemocratic and unacceptable.
"If regional zoning is the way to go, then what was the need of repealing section 2a of the old constitution?" posed Cooperatives Development assistant minister Jebii Kilimo who defected to TNA. "We should operate democratically and respect the rights of individuals as enshrined in the new constitution."
Under the regional zoning plan, TNA will not field candidates in Rift Valley, while URP will keep away from the Central Kenya region. But the parties will carry out joint nominations in areas where they both have supporters like in Nakuru county.
Keiyo South MP Jackson Kiptanui who is allied to URP and Elgeyo-Marakwet senate aspirant Julius Cheptilil echoed Jebii's sentiments and said the parties should rethink the strategy.
They warned that the plan may cause disaffection among aspirants who may feel they have been defeated unfairly.
Kilimo said there should be no limitations dictating to aspirants not to vie for seats in certain areas. Kilimo said aspirants were ready to compete against each other in fair nominations and the general elections and hence the parties should not create any hurdles.
On his part Cheptilil argues that zoning regions would translate to tribalism and making the parties tribal.
"Let the parties market themselves freely and the electorate will decide who or which of them to back. If we are democratic as we claim then we should not have fears against each other", said Cheptilil.
He urged the political parties to embrace the dynamics of change in politics and avoid making irrational decisions that would demoralize supporters.
Cheptilili said voters would also resist the move adding that the TNA and URP leaders should not endorse the plan. Kiptanui said the issue was of great concern and the parties should reach an acceptable position on the issue.
"This was just a proposal and we are dealing with it as a party but we will reach a solution", said Kiptanui.
Ruto and Uhuru will unveil their alliance on Sunday in Nakuru and give full details of the power sharing plan they have agreen on.
