Nigeria: Jombo-Ofo - FIDA, Others Seek Repeal of Federal Character Act

The appointment and delay in the swearing in of Justice Ifeoma Jombo-Ofo of the Court of Appeal (JCA) over a mix-up in her state of origin, has fuelled the push by women lawyers for a repeal of the Federal Character Commission Act.

Under the aegis of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the women have asked the Senate to revisit its memorandum during its public sessions on the review of the 1999 Constitution and repealed the Federal Character Commission Act for an Equal Opportunities Act.

In the memorandum submitted to the Senate and exclusively obtained by LEADERSHIP WEEKEND yesterday, FIDA asked the lawmakers to note that the Federal Character Commission Act is anti-marriage and discriminates against women in terms of employment at the federal level.

The memorandum was signed by the Country Vice -President/National President ,FIDA Nigeria, Barrister Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau and the National Secretary, Chigoziri Ojiaka.
