Moshi — KILIMANJARO region has reiterated commitment towards propping up the annual Kilimanjaro Marathon, stressing the importance of the race in promoting the region and its tourist attractions.
This was assured by the Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Leonidas Gama, during the launching of the Kilimanjaro regional version of the 2013 Kilimanjaro Marathon, which was held in Moshi, over the weekend.
Kilimanjaro is the home of the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the World at 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level.
The Mountain is one of the leading tourist attractions in the continent. "The Kilimanjaro Marathon is one of the important events in our country's sports calendar and has been one of the events which attracts many participants from both inside and outside the country", he said.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Moshi District Commissioner, Ibrahim Msengi, Gama challenged Tanzanian participants and the country's athletic leaders to make sure they prepare a team which would enable them win the event in both categories next year.
The Regional Commissioner also commended the main sponsors of the event the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager and other sponsors for continuing to support the Kilimanjaro Marathon, something which he said made the event sustainable.
Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Brand Manager, George Kavishe said, his brand has introduced an extra prize of Tsh. 3 million for Tanzanian athletes who will finish first in both men and women categories of the 42km Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon.
"This will encourage our athletes to work harder and make sure they win the event next year and to prove this, they have already started a training camp at Holili", he said.
He said Kilimanjaro Premium Lager would continue to support the event which he said continues to grow bigger and better and has proven to be a mark of respect for the Kilimanjaro region and the nation in general and that has played a big role in promoting Africa's highest peak internationally.
Kavishe also thanked the co-sponsors Vodacom, GAPCO, Tanga Cement, CFAO Motors, KK Security, Keys Hotel, TPC Sugar, Shoprite, New Arusha Hotel and Kilimanjaro Water for their continued support towards the event.
