South Africa: President Declares Special Official Funeral for Former Chief Justice

President Jacob Zuma has decided to declare the funeral of the late former President of the Constitutional Court and Chief Justice, Arthur Chaskalson as a Special Official Funeral.

This category of the funeral is reserved for distinguished persons specifically designated by the President of the Republic of South Africa.

The former Chief Justice Chaskalson served as the first President of the Constitutional Court. He also served as Chief Justice of South Africa from November 2001 until his retirement in 2005.

All national flags will fly at half-mast at all flag stations in the country from Monday, 3 December 2012 until 7 December 2012.

There will be a private family funeral which will take place on Monday, 3 December 2012 at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg, Gauteng province. President Jacob Zuma will attend the funeral.

Government will arrange an official memorial service details of which will be announced later.
