Kenya: Factories Still Dumping Waste Into Lake Victoria

OVER 90 per cent of industries that surround Lake Victoria do not comply with set effluent discharge standards and still discharge their raw waste straight into the lake according to a local anti-pollution organisation.

The Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre said it will give awards to some of the industries that have managed to cut down the emissions substantially with the the aim of motivating them and to increase awareness of the lake pollution.

"Most of the industries around the lake do not comply with the regulations meant to maintain acceptable air and water quality by ensuring proper waste management. That is why we started the programme," said KNCPC director Jane Nyakang'o.
