The Somali National Army is gearing up for a major offensive against al-Shabaab in key areas of Middle Shabelle, Defence Minister Abdihakim Haji Mohamud Fiqi said Saturday (December 1st).
Addressing soldiers during a visit to the frontlines near Jowhar in Middle Shabelle, Fiqi said the militant group should be prepared to lay down its arms or be crushed, according to UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan.
Fiqi said that while the government is committed to rebuilding the army and compensating soldiers appropriately, soldiers who commit human rights violations such as rape or looting, will face stiff penalties, including the death penalty.
