Japheth Katto, the Chief Executive Officer of the Capital Markets Authority, has been appointed a council member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
The appointment of Katto will go a long way in raising the profile of Uganda's accounting fraternity. "Japheth will be a full Council member and has all the rights and responsibilities that the role entails. This is the first time that Council has co-opted anyone to serve on Council since the bye-law amendments came into force in 2009," notes a statement from ACCA Uganda.
The statement added that "this is great news for Uganda and Africa in general."
According to different notes over the internet, Katto has been the chief executive officer of the Capital Markets Authority of Uganda since 1998. He is credited for steering Uganda's capital markets industry to the current levels, where there are 15 listed companies on the Uganda Securities Exchange.
Kato has worked in regulatory authorities in the United Kingdom.
