A PERSON died and 20 others got injured when a bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and overturned at Nkungi Village along the Kiomboi - Hydom Road in Mkalama District on Sunday.
Singida Regional Police Commander (RPC), Linus Sinzumwa told reporters that the fatal accident occurred at around 4:30pm.
The RPC named the deceased as Peter Ngoi (28), a resident of the nearby Iambi Village, in the newly established Mkalama District who was employed by the bus company as a loader. Sinzumwa explained that the ill-fated bus christened 'Jesus Love' with registration number T.123 AEH is believed to have been speeding.
The driver of the bus, Mathias Amiri (30), a resident of Sumati Village in Mbulu District, applied brakes with the aim of stopping at a bus stop, resulting in the speeding bus skidding off the road, overturning and crushing Ngoi's head before injuring 20 passengers.
The RPC said the injured were ferried and admitted to Iambi Missionary hospital. He also told reporters that the police were tracking down the driver of the bus who disappeared soon after the accident.
