The National Communications Authority (NCA), Ghana's telecom industry regulator has ordered Scancom Ltd to with immediate effect cease selling and/or adding any new SIM cards/subscribers to MTN network until further notice.
This follows the recent spate of service disruptions on the MTN network. The NCA has had to engage Scancom Ltd, on several occasions, on the issues of quality of service degradation- network reliability, network availability, call drop, call set-up, denial of service, among others being experienced by consumers of mobile services in the West African country.
These were contained in a short but concise press release issued by the Director-General of the National Communications Authority, Mr. Paarock Asuman VanPercy in Accra yesterday.
In spite of these engagements, network performance on MTN continues to deteriorate, the press release stated.
Welcoming the news, some MTN subscribers told the Business Chronicle that the move was in the right direction and commended the NCA for acting promptly to stop the largest telecom network operator from shortchanging Ghanaians.
A Senior Journalist at The Chronicle newspaper, Mr. Stephen Odoi-Larbi stated: "The directive by the NCA is long over due, but it is better late than never".
He continued: "MTN for far too long has been ripping me of my hard earned money, by providing me and several subscribers with poor services".
Anytime you place a call, it appears that the person has answered without you (the receiver) hearing the voice of the caller. This normally results in call dropping, Mr. Odoi-Larbi further narrated.
According to him, the largest telecom operator has not been able to tell the subscribers about why the network keeps on jamming.
Another frustrated MTN's subscriber, Mr. Isaac Mensah added that the management of the telecom firm is taking subscribers for granted, saying "the NCA has done a good job by stopping the company from adding new consumers onto the MTN network.
