Aminat Olowora Tuesday won the women's 5,000m to give Lagos the first gold medal of the track & field events of the 18th National Sports Festival.

The former table tennis player turned long distance runner, shocked Delta's national champion in the event, Deborah Pam to clinch the gold on a day Rivers State picked the men and women's 20km walk races effortlessly.

Olowora won Lagos State's only medal in the track & field at the last Games in Port Harcourt.

Hussain Yunusa was first in the male category while Gbenga Amos of Ogun and Ibrahim Joel of Delta State settled for the silver and bronze respectively.

The Garden City team similarly won the women version with Joy Darius picking the gold while Bolanle Kassem of Delta and Ogechi Obi of Imo settling for the silver and bronze respectively.

However, the fastest man and woman of the Eko 2012 will emerge Wednesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium track as the semi-finals and finals of the 100m will be decided this evening.

Both Delta and Rivers that have two sprinters each in the semi finals have to watch over their shoulders as Abia is waiting to profit from any slip up.

Ese Brume kept tradition of Delta jumpers winning the women long jump gold.
