Liberia: LP Warns Gov't Against Gifts

The opposition Liberty Party has warned the government to evaluate gifts that it receives from friendly nations or its adverse consequences could amount to 'new colonization'

"We should be very careful that we do not reintroduce colonialism in a different and manner in Liberia," Cllr. Fonati Koffa said Monday.

He also warned against handouts Liberia receives from friendly nations, adding, "We should be very careful that we do not reintroduce colonialism in a different manner in Liberia"

He did not site a specific instance of Liberia receiving gifts from a friendly nation for which the statement was prompted.

He however said "I mean we see a lot of people around here bearing gifts. I see now that we are heavily involved in the Chinese inducement in Liberia; we should be careful. We should evaluate the gifts we are getting, we should think that those things are going to cost us in the long run.

"We must be very careful of a new wave of colonialism coming to Liberia and coming to Africa," he said.

He added "We should not be depending on handouts all of the time. The people who are competing to give us something are the people we embrace and then pretty soon we will get in a society where we get in trouble."
