Nigeria: Ebonyi Commissioner Escapes Assassination

Abakaliki — EBONYI State Commissioner for Grants and Donor Agencies, Elder Fred Udeogu, has escaped assassination in the hands of unknown gunmen at his hometown in Ikwo local government area of the state.

The commissioner, who escaped the attack by whiskers, had been described in various quarters as one of the powerful aides to Governor Martin Elechi since the inception of the present administration in 2007.

An eyewitness, Mr. Ifeanyi Mbam, explained that some miscreants, who laid ambush for the commissioner while he was returning from the burial of the grandmother of wife to Senator Igwe Nwagu, blocked Opera Road at Ndiagu Achara community in Ikwo LGA council in order to unleash mayhem on their victim but failed.

"The policeman in the company of the convoy of the Commissioner opened fire when the miscreants carrying machetes, log of woods among other items tried to attack Chief Fred Udeogu.

"The plan of the hoodlums was to intercept the smooth movement of Commissioner Udeogu's convoy so that they can unleash their plot. Thank God they failed as they took to their heels."

Vanguard reliably gathered that the commissioner, who was whisked to safety by his aides, left the scene of the incident unhurt as his counterparts who saw him at the last Executive Council meeting noted that he was hale and hearty.

Although the motive of the planned assassination is yet to be ascertained, sources said it might be connected with the forthcoming local government election which is now gathering momentum in different political arena in the state.

It would be recalled that three months ago, Governor Martin Elechi's Special Adviser on Internal Security, Mr. Collins Agbo, escaped being shot by suspected assassins near Spera-in-Deo junction, along the Afikpo-Abakaliki expressway but his (Agbo) Personal Assistant; Mr. Paschal Ugadu, was killed during the incident.

Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Sylvester Igbo, said he was yet to be briefed on such development.

"Police is supposed to get such report but up till now such report has not got to us," the PPRO said.

Attempts made by our correspondent to speak with the victim (Elder Udeogu) proved abortive as he was said to be in a meeting with the Chief Security Officer of the state.
