Ghana: Disappointed Special Voters Can Still Vote

Kumasi — VOTERS WHOSE names did not appear on the voters' register for the special voting exercise last Tuesday are not completely out of the exercise. They cannot be said to have been disfranchised", the Electoral Commission (EC) has assured.

Mr. Isaac Owusu, a Deputy Regional Electoral officer explained that the problem could not be put entirely at the doorstep of the EC.

He told The Chronicle that the affected service personnel did not meet the requirements for submitting applications for the special voting through their various commands.

Mr. Owusu said in most cases, the voters did not provide detailed voter particulars besides their names.

According to him, some of them also did not transfer their votes because of the introduction of the biometric system while others did not provide photographs as required.

There are others whose voter ID numbers were not properly quoted as they were less than the required ten digits", Mr. Owusu indicated.

But Mr. Owusu said all is not lost as Service Commanders had been asked to make room for affected special voters to vote at their mother polling stations on Friday.
