Tunisia: Local Labour Union Calls General Strike

The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) called a general strike for December 13th, TAP reported on Wednesday (December 5th). The action comes in response to an attack on UGTT members outside the union headquarters in Tunis on Tuesday. The interior ministry confirmed clashes had taken place between trade unionists and members of the League for the Protection of the Revolution.

At the time of the attack, the unionists were gathered to mark the 60th anniversary of the assassination of UGTT founder Farhat Hached.

The nationwide strike call is only the third to be made by the UGTT since its founding in the 1940s, AFP noted.
