Nigeria: Former Boxer Appeals Ruling Denying Him Bail

Enugu — A retired boxer, Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, on Friday filed an appeal at the Enugu High Court challenging its ruling that refused him bail on Sept. 27.

Okoronkwo, who has been in custody for about two years, was denied bail on the grounds that the court could not reverse itself, having earlier denied him bail.

In the appeal, number CA/E/425/2012, filed by his counsel, Mr Nnaemeka Okeke, the boxer was seeking the appellate court's determination, whether his application for bail was an abuse of court process.

He also appealed to the superior court to determine whether a trial court with a general criminal jurisdiction, having rejected an earlier bail application could entertain another one predicated on changed circumstances.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the appellant is facing a 37-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences at Enugu. (NAN)
