Tanzania: Mzumbe Varsity Stresses Entrepreneurship

MZUMBE University has introduced entrepreneurship subject in all programmes offered by the institution to enable its graduates employ themselves or compete well in the East Africa labour market.

The University's Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance & Administration), Prof Faustin Kamuzora said during the 12the Convocation day held at the Main Campus here over the weekend that the subject would play a significant role in developing students.

"Our university teaches different professional and academic programmes that are marketable, with an addition to entrepreneurship subject our graduates will become more competent in regional labour market," Prof Kamuzora said. He said that the University Convocation Day recognizes the contribution of students and academicians who perform well in academics by awarding them cash prizes, a factor which boosts their morale to work hard.

"I appeal to graduates and stakeholders in education sector to attend the convocation day and air their views on how best the university can be developed and sustained," he said.

Speaking at the same occasion, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof Josephat Itika said the university has increased its enrolment and the number of students graduating at the varsity yearly. "We are really implementing the government plan of expanding the university. We are now having campuses in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Mwanza and Tanga," Prof Itika said.

He said the expansion was meant to enrol more students and have equal chance for both female and male students. Earlier, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joseph Kuzilwa said convocation day was introduced for the first time in 2005 as the special day to bring together students, graduates, academics, alumni and other stakeholders in education sector.

"The day gives us ample time to discuss different issues related to the development of university," he said, adding all agreed at the convocation normally are forwarded tothe university council for action.
