Kenya: Kalonzo Hopes for Wiper Endorsment

VICE President Kalonzo Musyoka is today expected to be endorsed as the Wiper Democratic Movement's presidential candidate during the party's convention to be held at the Kasarani sports complex.

The delegates are also expected to endorse the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (Cord) pact signed last Tuesday between Kalonzo, Prime Minister Raila Odinga's ODM and Cabinet minister Moses Wetangula's Ford Kenya.

Kalonzo will also seek his party's support to engage in "consensus and consultation" for the Cord presidential ticket along with Raila. The PM was on Friday endorsed by ODM as the party's presidential candidate in Cord.

The coalition agreement deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties last week reduced the joint presidential ticket (of president and deputy president) battle to the two parties- ODM and WDM.

"The candidates for president and deputy president shall be persons nominated by the ODM and WDM and the said candidates shall not come from the same party," the agreement stated.

Musyoka attended Friday's ODM delegates convention as an observer. While commending Raila for being nominated, Kalonzo expressed hope that he too will be endorsed unopposed.

No other candidate presented himself for nomination despite the amendment to the clause that had automatically reserved the presidential ticket to the ODM party leader. Cabinet ministers Anyang' Nyong'o and Henry Kosgey who were the emcees for the event only called on selected delegates--MP Josephat Nanok, minister William Ntimama, former Thika Mayor Mumbi Ng'aru, minister Ibrahim Elmi, preacher Juma Ngao, party activist Roza Buyu, assistant minister Wilfred Machage and Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa--to endorse Raila's nomination.

"Today you have gathered here to nominate your presidential candidate, on Monday members of Wiper delegates will be here to nominate their candidate. I see the Prime Minister has gone unopposed, I ask you to pray for me so that I can go unopposed too," Kalonzo said.

So far there has been no indication that anyone other than Raila and Kalonzo will be nominated as the coalition's presidential and deputy vice presidential candidates.

Kosgey has however indicated that he will present himself for nomination as the deputy President ticket. However,if this happens, then it means that Raila will not be the flagbearer as the coalition is clear that the president and running mate should not be from the same party.
