South Africa: Summer Season Disaster Awareness Campaign

press release

On 8 December 2012, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, in cooperation with the eThekwini Municipality, launched the Summer Season Disaster Awareness Campaign at Adams Mission on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) South Coast.

The summer season brings with it weather conditions which often give rise to disasters, in the form of floods, lightning strikes and fires. As part of the interventions to help save lives, new technology was introduced and demonstrated during the launch.

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube, and the Mayor of the eThekwini Municipality, Councillor. James Nxumalo, also handed over a house to a member of the community, Ms Gladys Dube. Ms Dube was the first recipient of a house, which replaces emergency tents provided to communities.

During her address, MEC Dube presented disaster management plans, especially for the festive season.
