Tunisia: President Marzouki Visits Mornaguia Prison - Respecting Inmates' Rights and Breaking With Torture

Carthage — President of the Republic Moncef Marzouki paid, on Monday morning, a visit to the Mornaguia prison to enquire about reforms in the penitentiary system and respect of human rights.

Escorted by Justice Minister Noureddine B'hiri and Human Rights and Transitional Justice Minister Samir Dilou, President Marzouki became acquainted with the prisoners' conditions and the problems they face.

He examined, with the two Ministers, means to develop a prison system which rests on the detainees' reintegration in society.

Lauding efforts of the prison officers, the President of the Republic underscored the need to respect the inmates' rights and break definitively with torture, emphasising the importance to restructure the prison institution in Tunisia so that it be in harmony with the Revolution claims.
