Documents Iin the possession of this paper has revealed that the Bishop Arthur F. Kulah United Methodist School in Virginia, outside Monrovia has increased fees for the West African Examination text slated for May next year.

Entry information for the May 2013 WAEC exams revealed that fees for junior and senior high schools certificate examinations are L$1,150.00 and L$1,850.00 respectively.

WAEC also charged a non-compulsory checking fee of L$200.00 for candidates or schools wishing to obtain the result checker cards. With the addition of non-compulsory checking fees, junior and senior high schools will pay L$1,350.00 and L$2,050.00 respectively.

However, The Principal of the Bishop Arthur F. Kulah United Methodist School, who refused to call his name to our reporter, justified the increment by L$450.00 to the amount approved by WAEC.

As a result of the increment by the Bishop Kulah School, the students will be required to pay L$1,800.00 and L$2,500.00 respectively as registration for WAEC exams. The Principal claimed that the extra fees were intended to undergo other costs associated with the exams.

We Are Taken aback by the unilateral decision by the Bishop Kulah United Methodist School where there is a set fee from WAEC.

We are very sure that no school has the authority to increase WAEC examination registration fees without prior knowledge to the governing institution.

What Is More shocking and disappointing is for a principal to justify an increment that is not sanctioned by WAEC.

This argument is bland because in such a situation, the decision to increase WAEC fees is not exclusively the right of the school, but that the Ministry of Education and WAEC must have a decision.

We know That the Bishop Kulah School is owned and operated by the Methodist Church in Liberia; however, we want to appeal to the Methodist Church to be flexible in dealing with this problem and mandate the school to follow instructions from the MOE and WAEC.

We See This approach by the Methodist school as a recipe for confusion, for if this is left unchecked, other institutions would definitely raise WAEC fees.

Against this backdrop, we urge WAEC to act now so that schools would not be law unto themselves.

However, if the Methodist School ignores the decision of WAEC and the MOE, than it should face the consequences for the action.
