Nakuru based Onkar Singh Rai clocked 1hour 48 minutes and 9 seconds to win the GA Insurance Coast Championship Rally following in Mombasa.
Onkar led his Kabras Sugar Racing teammate Anish Chouhan to a 1-2 finish as Mombasa based Sudesh Hirani sealed the podium dash in 1h57m09s.
"It was a tough rally. We had a few offs which led to a puncture on the 64km stage, so we lost a lot of time. But was fun trying to get that time back," Onkar said.
Khalid Yusuf in fourth overall position won the 2WD class followed by Nadeem Kana in eighth. Ravi Soni sounded enthusiastic on his first outing with Anish.
"I stood in for Kailesh (Chouhan) at Anish's request. Anish is my new Team Manager for 2013 as I sit with Boldy (Baldev Chager) next season, so it was a good way for me to go have fun and also acclimatise with my new team. I am glad that in my first rally with Kabras Team, we came number first and second," said Soni.
Naushad Kara navigated by Adnan Din were among the first casualties after the engine of their Subaru Impreza N12 ceased in CS2. Naushad was leading the rally by a 40seconds margin from Onkar by the time he exited the rally. Manmeet Singh "Vicky" also retired in service and didn't start CS4.
"So we had to retire with a broken rear left shock. Vicky was driving very well, we were lying 3rd overall going into service," navigator Shameer Yusuf said.
Spectators attending the event were treated to some exhilarating displays with a Sunday afternoon Spectator Special at Nguu Tatu. Rally cars then proceed to prize giving at Lighthouse Mama Ngina Drive Mombasa.
The event cover 150Km of competitive distance starting at 06.30am from Likoni and encircling Mombasa via OopMariakani, Mazeras and Nguu Tatu. Hapz Sagoo finished 6th and Jitendra Davda "Jitu" 7th.
"We had a good start. The first four sections went okay- with no major problems. But coming into CS5, CS6 and CS7 we slowed down completely as at the start of CS5 we started were already experiencing gear shift problems, hence I slowed down so we could finish the rally. The weather was extremely hot, but it was a good run, thanks to our sponsors, Sadolin Paints and Miwa Designs for having confidence in Sagoo Rally Team," said Hapz.
