Kenya: Clerk Wanted Over Sh16 Million

A warrant of arrest has been issued against the Migori Municipal Town Clerk Erastus Karani over a Sh16 million debt. The order was issued after the clerk failed to settle the debt as ordered by the court in Kisii.

The council owes James Majiwa Saita of Jamasai Renovators and General Contractors who had built the new Migori Bus Park. Saita said attempts to get his payment from the council had hit a snag.

The court ordered the clerk to pay the debt on March 16. Police officers yesterday visited his house and office seeking to execute the warrant but he was not available.

The council has a had series of financial problems for the last ten years ranging from delayed payments of salaries to accumulated debts of suppliers which officers at the council have blamed the situation on high wage bill for its about 150 employees against minimal revenue. The clerk said from his hideout that a solution to the dispute would be reached soon.
